What is balayage and how do we do it?

Balayage is a technique of manually applying color or lightener to selected sections of hair. The stylist works with a free-flowing motion, applying the product from the center of the strands to the ends, with a greater concentration on the ends. The result? Multi-tonal highlights that resemble natural sunlight.

We most often perform blonde balayage—warm or cool shades of blonde on a darker base. This option illuminates the face and adds lightness to the hairstyle. For those seeking a more vibrant effect, we offer colored balayage—using shades of copper, caramel, pink, or purple. We also perform men’s balayage, which subtly enlivens the hairstyle without any distinct color boundaries.

The price of balayage in our salon depends on the length and density of the hair, the number of tones, and the color range. If you’re planning a blonde balayage, the price will also depend on the initial level of lightening—a dark base requires more time and product. We provide a quote during the consultation—in Warsaw, before the treatment.

Contraindications include severely damaged or excessively porous hair. In such cases, we recommend first restoring the structure—this is essential for long-lasting color results.

With a dark base, some clients require prior illuminating selected parts of the hair— the scope is determined individually during the consultation.

If you are looking for a technique of a similar nature, but with a more intense contrast at the roots, it is worth familiarizing yourself with manual highlighting of strands in the Californian style.

After the treatment, many clients decide to delicately evens out and closes the shade, which enhances the shine and evens out the coloring effect.

Step by step – how do we work?

01
Consultation and shade selection

We assess the base color, texture, and length of the hair. We determine the coloring option, number of tones, and lightening range—ensuring the result is consistent with the client's complexion and expectations.

02
Hair preparation

We divide the hair into sections. For dark bases or hair requiring prior preparation, we perform additional steps before applying the actual color.

03
Hand paint application

The stylist applies the product to selected strands in a loose motion—without foil—from the center of the strand to the ends. The intensity of application varies depending on the section of the head.

04
Inspect and rinse

We monitor the product's exposure time on each section. Once the desired tone is achieved, we rinse and assess the evenness of the lightening.

05
Shade correction

Depending on the effect, we balance the tone – we lock in the color, neutralize unwanted reflections and enhance the shine of the ends.

06
Care and styling

We apply a regenerating mask, dry and style our hair. We discuss home care.tion – how to maintain color and shine between visits.

FAQ

  • How does this technique differ from classic highlights?

The highlights are applied in foil to evenly separated sections. During balayage, the stylist works by hand, using free-flowing movements—the effect is softer and more natural, with no distinct boundaries between colors.

  • How much does the treatment cost at PIED-DE-POULE?

The price depends on hair length, density, and the selected option. Contact us before your appointment—we’ll provide a personalized, no-obligation quote.

  • Is this method suitable for very dark hair?

Yes, but the effect may require lightening first. For a dark base, we discuss hair preparation during a consultation—before any application.

  • How long does the effect last?

With proper care, the effect lasts for several months. The roots grow in naturally—they don’t create a stark contrast like with traditional full-color dyeing.

  • Can the treatment be performed on short hair?

Yes, the technique also works well on shorter hairstyles. On shoulder-length hair or a bob, the effect is more concentrated, but just as natural and three-dimensional.
